온돌은 한국의 중요한 난방 방법이고 생활방식의 하나입니다.
  The Ondol heating system is an important part of the Korean life style.
 
  방바닥을 만들 때 넓적한 돌을 놓고, 그 위에 찰흙을 덮어 평평하게 한 다음, 한쪽에는 불을 땔 수 있는 아궁이를 만들고, 반대 쪽에는 굴뚝을 만듭니다.
  When making an ondol floor, clay is laid over a base of flat rock, and a fuel hole for a fire is made on one side and a chimney is made on the other.
 
  아궁이에서 불을 때서 방 전체를 따뜻하게 만드는 온돌식 난방은 나무나 풀, 석탄을 연료로 사용할 때부터 이용되던 한국의 가장 좋은 난방 방법이었습니다.

  한때 한국에서는 서양식 라디에이터로 난방을 하는 아파트를 지은 적이 있었습니다.

  그러나 이 방법은 한국인한테서 사랑 받지 못했습니다. 왜냐하면 한국인이 온돌에서 느끼는 따뜻하고 아늑한 느낌을 주지 못했기 때문입니다.
  However, they were not well received by Korean people because they did not give the ondol’s warm and cozy feeling.
 
  그래서 한국인은 보일러로 끓인 물을 방바닥에 깐 파이프로 방바닥 전체를 따뜻하게 만드는 방법의 현대식 온돌 방법을 이용하고 있습니다.
  So, the modern ondol heats the room by sending hot water from a boiler through a system of pipes embedded beneath the floor.
   
  한국인은 집에 들어갈 때 반드시 신발을 벗습니다. 한국인들이 신발을 벗는 이유는 안과 밖을 구분하고, 편안한 마음으로 돌아가고 싶어하는 무의식 때문입니다.

  이렇게 한국인에게 방바닥은 인간의 몸과 관계가 깊습니다.

  온돌식 집에서는 따뜻한 방바닥에 앉거나 눕는 자세가 가장 편안한 자세입니다. 그래서 그 첫 단계로 한국인은 집에 들어갈 때 신발을 벗습니다.
  Sitting or lying on a warm ondol-heated floor is the most comfortable position to be in Korean house. So, the first step of coming home is taking off your shoes.
